Overview:
AVG 8.0 offers a completely new multi-threaded scanning engine that combines anti-virus and anti-spyware while retaining the product's signature small footprint and scanning efficiency. Additional protection is provided in the form of safe searching and safe surfing protection acquired through the recent purchase of Exploit Prevention Labs, rootkit detection, basic security for MSN and ICQ instant messaging, and detection of malware-infected files on websites.

AVG 8.0 is designed to protect users against current and future threats without impacting system performance, a task made significantly easier by the completely redesigned user interface and inclusion of the handy AVG Security Toolbar. AVG 8.0 delivers a significant number of new benefits to users designed to deliver enhanced protection against the latest web-borne threats without sacrificing the product's signature efficiency and unobtrusiveness.

With AVG 8.0, AVG raises the bar further by providing improved protection against traditional threats such as viruses, spam, spyware and trojans as well as new protection against emerging threats including web exploits, drive-by downloads, phishing, and rootkits. Following is a summary of new and improved features:

New Anti-Exploit Technology- AVG 8.0's patent-pending safe surfing and safe searching technology is designed to protect users of Internet Explorer and Firefox browsers against drive-by downloads from poisoned web pages and to flag dangerous search results in Google, Yahoo and MSN search engines.

New Web Shield- Complementing the safe surfing and searching technology, the new Web Shield module scans files during download or exchange over ICQ or MSN instant messaging to ensure they are safe and free of malicious content.

New High Performance Scanning Engine- AVG has reengineered the scanning engine from the ground up to tackle viruses and spyware in a single pass, delivering improved performance and speed through support for multi-core computers, reduced system resource requirements, and streamlined maintenance.

New User Interface- Enables more intuitive and efficient operation for novice and advanced users alike.

New Anti-Rootkit- This new component removes and protects against rootkits, an especially pernicious form of malware that can give cybercriminals high-level control over infected computers.

New Firewall- The all-new AVG firewall is designed to protect computers against unauthorized access from internal and external networks as well as direct hacker attacks.

Improved Anti-Virus- Provides improved detection of hidden viruses, faster scanning, and more intuitive scheduling of scans.

Improved Resident Shield- Provides enhanced on-access scanning with the ability to scan multiple file-open requests simultaneously.

Anti-Spam- Brings faster performance to minimize email processing time and ensure prompt delivery of messages.

I have been happy with the AVG security suite. It does take some resources, but less than other security suites that I have tried.

I use AVG IS on 2 PCs, both have the same problem, SOMETIMES a newly opened IE window can't connect to web site(even localhost) while ping and other web applications working fine. I did a lot of seach on internet, try to find out the problem and did some changes on my PC, finally found out it's because of AVG. After uninstall AVG, they are back to normal. So I'm only using AVG Anti-Virus part now. And my PC got much faster.

AVG 7.5 was extremely good: fast, reasonably lightweight and unobtrusive. Version 8 is awful: *extremely* bloated, cumbersome, and it often floods the user with useless popups and notifications.

This version suddenly slowed my computer down and made me loose emails. It's too invasive when it comes to taking time to check every email and send those you might want to the spam file. Others didn't even make it to my inbox for whatever reason.

I downloaded the trial version and it brought surfing to a crawl. Even with LinkChecker disabled it was still really slow. An informal side-by-side comparison to my older laptop (running AVG 7.5 and Spyware Blaster) showed that the same page (Yahoo) was 30 seconds slower on a brand-new Dell desktop running AVG 8. I uninstalled AVG 8 and setup 7.5 with Spyware Blaster on the desktop and now it's smokin' fast. And, the latter setup is free.

AVG does a great job on antivirus , so from my point of view if something goes wrong at time of removal... hey you got a virus!dont blame it on Free AVG.

Well my desktop has 4 gig ram and a 3.0 possessor,my laptop has 4 gig ram and a 2.0 possessor. I don't know if that really makes a difference but AVG 8.0 has not affected my computers at all. I have 20 days left on the trial. This is FAST,QUIET & EFFECTIVE. I really like it. It is not a resource hog like I have read. It does the job and does it very well. GET IT.

Firewall changes to block VPN every time!

Compared to Zone Alarm Security Suite, AVG Internet Security wins hands down, I no longer have to worry about how badly my computer system will be screwed up as I did during the last two Zone Alarm Security Suite upgrades. Give AVG Security Suite a try. You'll be much happier with it.

Does not like computers with less than 1GB of ram. I have tried installing this lovely antivirus on my sisters PC with 512 and it slowed down to a crawl.

Suffice to say I changed back to 7.5. 8.0 sucks the life out of your computer slowing it to let a snail pass. Come on AVG!!! You CAN do better. You HAVE done better. I wrote them an email and they wanted to know what "error code" I received. I said the whole new edition is it's own error code.

AVG 8.0 Internet Security is an Excellent piece of software which does exactly it states! The virus database is easy to update as well as the firewall is to configure. One of the best AV and combined firewalls i've seen in a while. Would definitely recommend to a friend!

by jscott418
AVG has turned a perfectly good AV software into something just as bad as those suites that come with computers (you know the ones!). It is so hard to find a good basic AV program. They all try and be a all purpose tool and end up causing more problems. Frankly, I have gone back to using the online scans every week or so and just being cautious and not having any AV installed.

I just deleted 8.0 on both of our computers - going back to 7.5. Both computers were noticeably slower and my laptop had started freezing - something it's never done. I was careful to only install AVG8 -(custom) without the addons. The interface is confusing - too much going on - I suppose I would've gotten used to it in time but the performance issues settled it. It's not the AVG that was basic and always dependable - been using it for years! yep - disappointed.....
